Placement tests vary by school, but nearly all of them are checking the same three things: comfortable arithmetic (including fractions, decimals, and percentages), solid algebra fundamentals, and sometimes a bit of basic statistics. There’s rarely anything exotic on it — it’s a check of whether the basics are actually automatic, not just familiar.
Why the stakes are higher than they look
Most students treat a placement test like a formality. It isn’t. Placing into a course below your actual level means paying for and sitting through material you already know, stretching out the path to a degree. Placing above your level without the prerequisite skills solid means struggling through a course that assumes fluency you don’t have yet — a much worse position than starting one level down would have been.

A common placement-test style question: convert 0.375 to a fraction in lowest terms. 0.375 = 375/1000, and dividing both by their greatest common factor (125) gives 3/8. Questions like this aren’t hard — but if fraction-decimal conversion isn’t automatic, they cost time and confidence that compounds across the rest of the test.
How sessions are structured
We start by checking which foundational skills are genuinely solid versus rusty — often it’s not new math at all, just material that hasn’t been touched in a year or two. Sessions target exactly those rusty spots, with real practice questions, so the test reflects what you actually know rather than what you forgot to review.
The mistake I see most
Not preparing at all because it “isn’t a real test.” The fix is treating it with the seriousness its consequences deserve — a few focused sessions beforehand is far cheaper than an extra semester.
